Course Overview

Early childhood offers a critical window of opportunity to shape a child’s holistic development trajectory and build a foundation for their future. The course is designed to give participants the foundation for understanding the field of child development. It establishes the knowledge base for domains of early childhood development (ECD), developmental milestones, the impact of context and culture on child development, etc. This course will introduce the major theories and the strengths and shortcomings of each. This course will also present a range of concepts and issues on play, play-based ECD models, and BRAC’s Play Lab Model & HPL as successful implementation of learning through play pedagogy, creativity, socio-emotional learning, and mental health of children. The course addresses basic concepts of school readiness, factors affecting children’s school readiness, the purposes of individualized teaching & the dimensions of the individual child. Additionally, the course will provide strategies for teachers to practice individualized teaching in classroom contexts. The course also looks at the issue of children with special needs, and contemporary issues in child development. Adults’ role in child development will be discussed throughout the course.

Course Objective

Introduce the major theories and the strengths and shortcomings of each; an appreciation of the impact of context and culture on child development.

Present a range of concepts and issues on play, creativity and socio-emotional learning which assist to understand the relationship between learning through play and child development; emotional wellbeing and mental health of children (also in emergency contexts).

Discuss the purpose and importance of individualized teaching and provide ways to individualize teaching based on each dimension of the individual child

  1. Explain the concept of Early childhood Development, Domains of Development and importance of studying Early Childhood Development from a multicultural perspective
  2. Describe the Psychoanalytic (Ericson) Theory, Cognitive Developmental (Piaget) Theory, Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory, Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, with their contributions and limitations; Use critical thinking to assess the theories from a multicultural point of view
  3. 3. Describe the definition of play, the problems in defining play, the major types of play with their relative educational value, and the Play-Based ECD Models as successful implementation of learning through play pedagogy
  4. Know about creativity, the importance of creative art (Creative Expressions through Play: Dance, Music, Drama, Drawing, and Play) & creative teacher; recognize adult’s role in supporting children’s play & creativity
  5. Know about school readiness, factors affecting children’s school readiness, and seven key messages for policymakers
  6. Describe the concept of Social-Emotional Development, Socio-Emotional Development Learning Standards, Judgement-free positive environment and the concept of ‘Resilience’
  7. Identify the purposes of Individualized Teaching & the dimensions of the individual child, different strategies of Individualized Teaching; Understand children with special needs (early identification) and management of special needs children
  8. Explain the concept of emergency, children in emergency situations and child vulnerability during emergencies
