Overview

The course provides a thorough introduction to quantitative research methods in education. Quantitative Methods in Education engage in the science and practice of educational measurement and evaluation primarily through the application of statistical methods informed by the study of teaching and learning statistics. In this course, the learner will study quantitative research methods in education, evaluation, and statistics to address practical problems of education. The course equips the learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to prepare for an educational research project using quantitative research methods. To meet the current demand for training on quantitative methods in educational research, this course has been designed to help academics, researchers, students (both undergraduate and graduate), and professionals coming from different backgrounds to learn about basic quantitative methods and learn to analyze data from research using SPSS software, interpret the result and apply the knowledge in their respective fields

Learning Outcomes

The course aims to develop participants’ general research methodological competence and critical thinking to a level commensurate with what is required by a researcher within the field of education. After successful completion of the course, the student should be able to achieve the following learning outcomes.

Knowledge

Describe key characteristics of experimental, quasi-experimental, and non-experimental designs
Describe and explain methods of analysis suited for different designs
Explain the notion of validity of causal inference and threats to valid causal inference
Explain the notion of validity and reliability of educational measurement, including threats to valid and reliable measurement

Skills and Competencies

Orally and in writing discuss possibilities and limitations of quantitative methods within educational contexts
Critically discuss scientific projects and articles with respect to their:
Research design, using appropriate terminology and conceptual tools
Measurement procedures and methods, using appropriate terminology and conceptual tools
Statistical analysis procedures, using appropriate terminology and conceptual tools

Day 2: Objective; Research Questions; variables; hypothesis; validity and reliability
Day 3: Data Collection: Methods; survey; sample and sampling; types of sampling; and process of sampling
Day 4: Data Collection: Development of tools/ Instruments; scales etc.
Day 5: Analysis & Interpretation using statistics: Installation and introduction of SPSS; Data presentation- Descriptive Statistics; interpreting statistical tables and graphs to display quantitative information
