About Course

This course will introduce the participants to key theories and basic concepts of play, for example: Benefits of play in nurturing children’s spontaneity and how play can help promote socio-emotional development of children and adults…good understanding of social-emotional learning, empathy and the importance of positive relationships between children and adults. The course will aid participants in developing a good understanding of social-emotional learning, empathy and importance of positive relationships between children and adults to set the stage for children’s future learning and emotional stability. In addition, the course will offer ideas on how to develop a positive environment for children where they can feel safe to be creative and innovative. The discussions will require thinking through how socio-emotional development can help children overcome difficult situations and how different play activities can lead to desired outcomes. The participants will be engaged in various activities and learning experiences to understand the present practices in local, national and global contexts. This course is designed to provide participants with quality experience, and the opportunity to reflect critically on their own beliefs.

  • Class Time: 6:00 pm – 08:30 pm
  • Class Days: Sunday and Monday

Course Feature

  • Introduce the concepts and theories related to socio-emotional learning and development through play, emotional well-being and mental health of children and adults.
  • Provide a unique context to establish the importance of creative expressions through play and contextualizing the plays in culture while bridging among theory, applicable skills and practice
  • Developing participants’ skills to design appropriate play which ensures learners’ socio-emotional development, and explores the role of adults in creating a stress-free, child-friendly learning atmosphere.

What I will learn?

  • Achieved through a wide range of reading, discussion and activities an understanding of the concepts of play and socio-emotional development such as self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision making etc. through a wide range of reading and discussion.
  • Become aware of approaches to play and learning standards to ensure socio-emotional development and wellbeing among children.
  • Become aware of well-being and importance of mental health in adults and exploring how self-care translates into caring for others.
  • Been introduced to benefits of play and nurturing children’s spontaneity and significance of culturally rooted plays and human-mediated plays in everyday life.
  • Reflected critically on their own beliefs on the role of play in promoting socio-emotional learning and development.
  • Reflected critically on child-child and child-adult interactions through play.
  • Developed skills to design plays, appropriate settings and materials that can help address children’s socio-emotional development and wellbeing
  • Been introduced to BRAC’s Play Lab Model as a successful implementation of learning through play and grounding the conceptual ideas of learning through play pedagogy in the context of Bangladesh.
