A summer semester in American University of Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan

BRAC IED, BRAC University, in collaboration with the Institute of Education, American University of Central Asia (AUCA), Kyrgyz Republic, has developed a comprehensive course on Early Childhood Development and Education. This course was offered twice during the summer semesters of 2022 and 2023, as an integral part of the MA in Teaching program at AUCA. The classes were conducted by esteemed faculty members from BRAC IED, including Senior Lecturers Syeda Fariha Shaheeda Isalm and Ferdousi Khanom.

The primary focus of this course lies in understanding the significance of early childhood in shaping a child’s overall development trajectory and laying a foundation for their future. The course equips participants with essential knowledge about various domains of Early Childhood Development (ECD). Participants gain insights into how contextual factors and cultural influences impact a child’s growth and development. A key component of the course revolves around exploring play and play-based ECD models as successful pedagogies for fostering learning through creativity, socio-emotional learning, and promoting children’s mental health. Throughout the sessions, contemporary issues in child development are also addressed, with a particular focus on children with special needs.



One of the most enriching aspects of the course has been the diverse cultural backgrounds of enthusiastic students from Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, China, Kurdistan, and Iraq. Their unique perspectives have significantly enriched the learning experience, providing valuable insights into the challenges and best practices in education.
The collaborative effort between BRAC Institute of Educational Development and the Institute of Education at AUCA has resulted in an exceptional course on Early Childhood Development and Education. By imparting foundational knowledge, fostering an understanding of play-based pedagogies, and exploring the multifaceted aspects of child development, this course has undoubtedly contributed to shaping more informed and compassionate educators and professionals in the field of Early Childhood Education.
